The gas compliance certificate Deagon owners ask us about is written proof from the licensed gasfitter that the work meets the rules, and every install we finish for Deagon homes and shops gets one. What counts as gas work, and who may do it, is set out on our gas fitting page. Two related jobs also end in paperwork: a new cooktop is covered under gas cooktop installation, and a gas smell is covered under gas leak repairs.

Which Gas Jobs Come With a Certificate
A gas compliance certificate is the written record a licence holder gives you confirming a finished gas installation or alteration complies with the rules. It passes to you as the owner immediately once the work is done.
An installation means a new gas system going in, such as fresh pipework for a stove or heater. An alteration means a change to a system already serving the place, which includes adding an outlet like a gas bayonet point for a barbecue.
Not every visit ends in one. A repair or a service is neither an installation nor an alteration, so no certificate follows.
A different paper covers safety problems. Queensland gas work rules require a gasfitter with a safety concern about the system at hand to give the owner or operator a defect notice, unless the concern is fixed straight away.

Owner, Gasfitter and Gas Network Operator
You, as the owner, get the original. The licence holder who finishes the work issues it through the state government's online certificate register, and you keep it with the property records.
Where your gas comes through a distribution network, the gas network operator receives a copy within 5 days of the work wrapping up. That lodgement is the licence holder's job, not yours.
Metal plates fixed to the pipework were once standard. That requirement was relaxed in July 2025, and most installs now skip the plate, because the certificate does the job the plate used to do.

Gas Safety Between Certificates
The certificate covers a single moment in time: the day the system went in or was changed. It doesn't vouch for the system forever. The Queensland Government advises owners to have appliances such as cookers and barbecues checked and serviced periodically by a licensed gasfitter, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Between visits, the Government's owner checklist covers the visual basics:
- look over pipework and appliances for corrosion, for deterioration, and for any damage;
- keep anything flammable well clear of appliances;
- leave cylinders secured away from ignition or heat, valve sealed shut when not in use, even when the bottle is empty.
Never go hunting for a leak yourself. A gas smell is urgent, so treat it that way and call.
The suburb has a rental side to it, too. The census counted 114 flats and apartments here, and units around Braun Street and the older cottages often sit in tenancies.
- Queensland tenancy law classes a gas leak, a supply failure or a breakdown of an appliance providing hot water, cooking or heating as an emergency repair.
- The same law puts the owner or manager under a duty to deliver the rental in good repair and hold it there for the entire tenancy.
No rule forces a seller or landlord to produce a certificate. Agents and buyers often ask anyway, so knowing where yours sits saves a scramble later.
A Lost or Missing Gas Certificate
Work backwards through three places, in this order:
Housing here runs from pre-1940 weatherboard to 1960s-1980s brick, so gas work can be decades old. A cottage near the Taoist temple on Depot Road, converted long before electronic lodgement existed, may have no paper trail at all, and the property lookup is often the quickest answer for owners there.
- 1

The paperwork from the job
Check the folder of invoices, emails and manuals before anything else; the certificate often sits with them.
- 2

The gasfitter who handled the work
That licence holder lodged the certificate, so a phone call usually produces a reissue or at least the details needed to search.
- 3

The state's certificate register
Certificates are held there, and the lookup runs by property, which suits homes whose records have gone missing.

Gas Certificate Questions From Deagon
Call (07) 3523 7172What is a gas compliance certificate?
The certificate is your licensed gasfitter's written sign-off that a finished gas system, newly installed or altered, meets the rules. You receive it the moment the work wraps up. A routine service visit doesn't trigger one.
Who gets a copy of the gas certificate?
You do, as the owner. Your original copy is issued to you electronically through the state's system once the job is finished. Where a network supplies the gas, the operator of that network gets a copy inside 5 days too.
How do I find my gas certificate in Deagon?
Start with the invoices, emails and manuals from your gas job paperwork, then contact the licensed gasfitter who handled the work, since that person lodged it. The state also holds certificates in a searchable online system, and its search page finds them by property.
Do gas installs in Deagon still need a compliance plate?
No, for most installs the plate is gone. The rules changed in July 2025 and the electronic certificate took the plate's place. Your gasfitter can confirm whether your install is one of the exceptions.
How long is a gas compliance certificate valid?
The certificate has no expiry date and no renewal rule; it records the system's state on the day the work finished. Appliance age and how hard the system works drive when the next service is worth booking, and we price any service with a fixed quote before work starts.
